The Bayview Difference: Coffee Varietals We Grow

Exploring the Varieties of Coffee at Bayview Farm Coffee

Welcome to Bayview Farm Coffee! Today, we’re diving into the world of coffee beans and the unique varieties we grow right here on our farm. If you’ve ever wondered what makes Kona coffee so special, you’re in for a treat.

A World of Coffee Trees

Did you know there are four main species of coffee trees grown around the world? Each one has its own unique characteristics, and here at Bayview Farm, we take pride in growing the best of the best. Let’s break it down:

  1. Arabica

Arabica coffee is the superstar of the coffee world, representing about 70% of global coffee production. Within the Arabica species, there are over 100 different varieties. The Arabica Typica strain is the gem we nurture here at Bayview Farm.

  • Why Arabica Typica? These beans are known for their larger size and superior flavor, which translates to a better cupping experience.
  • Perfect Conditions: Arabica Typica thrives in higher elevations and needs a balanced mix of sunshine, rain, and shade. Kona’s climate, with its sunny mornings, shaded afternoons, and occasional misty rain showers, provides a favorable environment.
  • Our Soil: The volcanic soil in Kona is heavy in micronutrients and offers excellent drainage, creating ideal conditions for our coffee trees.
  1. Canephora (Robusta)

While we focus on Arabica Typica, it’s interesting to know about Robusta coffee as well. Robusta beans are typically grown in Africa and Brazil.

  • High Production: These trees yield more coffee per tree and can grow at lower elevations.
  • Heat Resistant: Robusta handles heat better than Arabica and has double the caffeine content, giving it a more acidic, and bold flavor.
  1. Liberica and Excelsa

These two species are less common and have their own unique flavors. While not as widely known, they contribute to the rich diversity of coffee globally.

Our Kona Coffee Trees

At Bayview Farm, our Kona coffee trees can grow up to 30 feet tall, but we keep them at a manageable 7-8 feet for easy handpicking. Each tree can produce 10-15 pounds of coffee cherries. Our precise handpicking process ensures that only the ripest cherries are harvested, contributing to the quality of our coffee.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Kona’s weather patterns are a dream for coffee cultivation. With sunny mornings, shaded afternoons, and just the right amount of rain, our coffee trees thrive. The volcanic soil provides essential nutrients and proper drainage, allowing the roots to develop strong and healthy.
