Precision and Patience: The Bayview Coffee Harvest

Take a Look at the Unique Harvesting Process Behind Bayview’s Coffee

Aloha, and welcome back to Bayview Farm Coffee!. We're a family-owned Kona coffee farm resting in the heart of the Big Island of Hawaii. With over two decades of experience, our farm has become a beacon for coffee enthusiasts worldwide who seek a truly exceptional cup of Kona coffee. Today, we’re excited to share with you our unique harvesting process and explain why we handpick our coffee cherries, a method that sets us apart and ensures the highest quality in every cup you enjoy.

A Rich History Rooted in Tradition

Kona coffee has a rich history dating back to 1828 when it was first introduced to the Kona region by Reverend Samuel Ruggles. The volcanic soil and unique climate of Kona provided the perfect conditions for the coffee plants to thrive, and Kona coffee quickly gained a reputation for its smooth, rich flavor. At Bayview Farm, we are proud to carry on this tradition, cultivating coffee trees on 20 acres of our 25-acre farm, with the remaining land dedicated to other tropical fruits and our processing areas.

Our farm was originally one of the largest processing mills from 1993 to 2010. Founded by Andrew and Roslyn Roy, Bayview Farm has always been at the forefront of innovation and education in the Kona coffee industry. From the creation of the first-ever tasting room and educational tours at our Gazebo to our commitment to authentic Kona coffee, we have always believed in sharing the story of our coffee from "cherry to cup."

Why Handpicking Matters

At Bayview Farm, we are committed to preserving the traditional methods of coffee cultivation, including the time-honored practice of handpicking our coffee cherries. But why do we handpick when there are faster, more automated methods available? The answer lies in our dedication to quality.

Unlike machine harvesting, which strips all cherries whether they’re ripe or unripe from the branches, handpicking allows us to selectively harvest only the ripest cherries. Coffee cherries do not ripen all at once; instead, they mature at different times. This means that each tree needs multiple rounds of picking to ensure only the cherries that are perfectly ripe are harvested. By handpicking, we ensure that only the best cherries make it into your coffee cup, resulting in a superior flavor profile that is clean, bright, and full of nuanced flavors unique to Kona coffee.

The Unique Climate and Soil of Kona

Kona’s unique weather pattern, with sunny mornings, afternoon shade, and misty rain showers, creates an ideal environment for growing Arabica Typica coffee, the variety we cultivate here at Bayview Farm. Our coffee trees are pruned to a manageable height of 7-8 feet, allowing our skilled pickers to access every branch easily. The rich volcanic soil, full of micronutrients and with excellent drainage, further supports the healthy growth of our coffee trees, yielding beans with exceptional flavor and quality.
